Prof. Masamichi Yoshimura is the group leader of the Surface Science Laboratory at Toyota
Technological Institute, Nagoya, Japan, and a fellow of the Surface Science Society of Japan.
His research centers on scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and tip-enhanced Raman
spectroscopy (TERS) with custom-made high-sensitivity probes for nanoscale characterization
of carbon and two-dimensional materials. He also works on the synthesis of nanocarbons and
2D materials by chemical vapor deposition and chemical exfoliation, and on their application to
proton-conducting membranes, fuel cells, lithium- and sodium-ion batteries, and functional
superhydrophobic materials. He has published over 250 papers in international journals and
delivered numerous invited and keynote lectures. He received his BS, MS, and PhD in applied
physics from the University of Tokyo, was a visiting scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory, California, USA, and served as Associate Professor at Hiroshima University before
joining Toyota Technological Institute. He was the chair of the JSPS 167th Committee on
Nanoprobe Technology.
